Field Demonstration of Parallel Operation of Virtual Synchronous Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters and a Diesel Synchronous Generator in a Microgrid

With the growing shift toward renewable energy, attention focused on disadvantages of current control inverter-based distributed generators, such as lack grid-forming ability and inertia. To provide inertia support ability, virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) have been proposed. Various methods related to VSGs reported, various research challenges evaluated. However, only a few experimental demonstrations addressed. Recommended practices for were launched IEEE Standard Project 2988 March 25, 2021, with considered be new technology that is nearly ready put into practical use. Therefore, real-scale grid are important establishing technical standard VSGs. In this study, was built by simulating an actual microgrid approximately 1:1 power capacity scale. simulated grid, 125 kVA provided diesel SG, five 20 inverters battery energy system (BES) used, generation penetration inverter BES units achieved 44.4%. Six different scenarios operation forming (GFM-BES) following (GFL-BES) evaluated comparatively. System inertia, transient steady state sharing characteristics affected degrees GFM-BES under sudden load change demonstrated. Moreover, forming, synchronization, frequency regulation, regulation demonstrated through field tests. The simulations experiments also constant which expected helpful future topic. findings paper instructions engineers model, design, test generators.
